US Laser Interferometry Observatory detected the third gravitational wave

United States scientists at the Laser Interferometric Gravitational Wave Observatory (LIGO) announced recently that they were the third to detect gravitational waves created by the merger of double black holes.

The latest issue of the U.S. Physical Review Letters reports that the two black holes are about 3 billion light-years away from the Earth, with a mass of about 19 and 32 suns before the merger, respectively. The total combined mass is about 49 sun, about 2 sun's mass into energy in the form of gravitational waves released.

In February 2016, the LIGO project team announced that they were the first to directly detect the presence of gravitational waves in human history, which is considered as an important milestone in physics and astronomy. Four months later, the project team announced the second detection of gravitational waves, which they called "cosmic music."
